Stan James Review
Since 1933, Stan James has been a well-known and well-respected gambling brand. In addition to having close to 100 high street Stan James bookmakers, they also have https://www.stanjames.com. Based in Gibraltar, the brand is licensed by the Government of Gibraltar; this means that the regulatory body that they fall under is the Gibraltar Gambling Commission. The online platform has been owned by Unibet Group since 2015, offering sporting markets that include football, golf, horse racing, cricket, tennis, and over 25 more markets to choose from. Stan James also offer In-Play betting options, as well as a range of special markets determined by the time of year, such as the Premier League and the Live NFL.
In addition to the Sports section of the online platform, Stan James offers a range of casino slots in their casino section, a games section, poker, bingo, and a live casino, in which you can play with live dealers.
The welcome bonus doesn’t quite match up to other brands; new players creating an account are eligible for a £10 free bet on Stan James after placing their first £10 bet on any sport, across any market. As far as the industry goes for introductory sports bet offers, this is quite a low bonus amount.
Betting app/ mobile friendly site
The Stan James mobile website and application support all of the same sporting markets as the desktop website, including Specials and In-Play betting. For iOS users, the Stan James app is downloadable on the App Store. Unfortunately, Android users must download it directly from the Stan James website, as when Google Play lifted restrictions around real money gaming apps, this company was not one of those operators who jumped on the opportunity to publish an app.
Still, the Stan James website is well-optimised for those players who visit the mobile version of the website. Accessing the home screen, you can see that aesthetically, the website is essentially the same as it is displayed on the Stan James mobile sports app, discounting the reduction in screen real estate, caused by the mobile browser’s URL bar.
Bonus, free bets and promotions
The first offer worth mentioning is always the new player bonus. For Stan James, this comes in the form of a £10 free sports bet, which can be obtained after placing a qualifying bet. A qualifying bet is a £10 sports bet on any sport, and on any market. It’s good to see that the criteria are quite easy to meet, given that this bonus is fairly low as far as first-time, new player bonuses go in the sports betting industry. Some other brands have been known to offer much higher amounts, but these brands are also some of the biggest and best-known in the industry so we can’t downgrade Stan James for this.
Overall, promotions were difficult to find. It was only after clicking on a specific promotion on the homepage, and then backtracking through tabbed sections at the top of the page, that we were able to locate a promotions page with details of all of the offers available. The listed promotions included ‘Best Odds Guaranteed on UK & Irish Horse Racing’, ‘£5 free on the Premier League’, which was running at the time of writing, and ‘Daily Horse Racing Offers’. One of the bonuses worth mentioning is ‘up to 15% worth of bonus winnings on Lucky 15, Lucky 31 and Lucky 63’ selections.
Finally, the company do mention that they pay out free bets and deposit bonuses on an invite-only basis from time to time, using Stan James promo codes, but it gives no mention of the qualifying criteria. Most operators do this for customers who regularly deposit and play on the site, so it’s a lucky dip for anybody who decides to play on with Stan James, after the initial bonuses are used. Aside from invite-only codes, at the time of writing this review in 2017, there were no Stan James promo codes.
How fair is the betting website
With an established reputation, a large number of high street bookmakers, and having recently become part of the Unibet Group, the website is trustworthy and has been around for a long time. The website uses secure HTTPS protocol, and there have been no security scares in recent memory or in the news. As mentioned in many StanJames reviews, they’re known for offering odds better than many other brands, too.
In terms of payment options, Stan James supports Visa Debit and Electron, as well as MasterCard and MasterCard Debit. Maestro and Solo are also supported, as are e-wallets Skrill, Neteller and PayPal. New players to Stan James may be wondering how long a withdrawal takes; on average, it’s 3 to 5 days for cards, whereas the PayPal withdrawal time at Stan James – as well as other e-wallets – can be as fast as 24 hours.
About the betting odds from the betting site
Stan James are known for having one of the lower margins on their markets, particularly across certain sports such as golf; however, some customers have reported that they can be slow to get the markets updated. They typically tend to go a few points above other brands at the lower end of the markets. When heading for the three-figures or higher odds, i.e. 100/1 or higher, they tend to offer much higher odds themselves. Though this isn’t always guaranteed, they do tend to be more generous than some operators.
This is a falling down point for Stan James. When reviewed, the website only had a single email address point of contact listed under the ‘Contact Us’ page on the platform (firstname.lastname@example.org). There was an additional link to a media page, but this returned an error and couldn’t be located. Upon further investigation, there appears to be other contact information, though it was obscurely listed under mobile promotions; Stan James is reachable via live chat, or on 0800 211 222. Alternatively, email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org are viable contact email addresses.
Stan James isn’t a bad operator per se, but there are some small downsides that place it behind a number of other UK betting sites. Most notably, the fact that the introductory bonus for new players is quite low, and the customer support offered at the time of writing this Stan James review was hard to locate are issues. However, the brand has been around for a considerable period of time, and although these issues reflect badly on Stan James, they’re not major red flags that would prevent us from listing this as a good overall choice for gamblers.
