It’s been an exciting week for British tennis fans. Johanna Konta managed to progress to semi-finals of the Nature Valley Open, while Dan Evans returned from his ban. Unfortunately, Katie Boulter lost to Ashleigh Barty, so she won’t join Konta in the semis.
Interestingly, this is Johanna’s first semi-final since Wimbledon last year. This time around, she’s going to face her Wimbledon rival, Donna Vekic. Vekic managed to beat Konta in Nottingham’s finals last year, but Konta evened the score at Wimbledon. Now, they’ll get to go at it again for a shot at the Nature Valley finals.
On the other hand, Katie Boulter was destroyed by Ashleigh Barty. Barty defeated Boulter 6-0, 6-2 within an hour. With that victory, Barty moves on to play against Naomi Osaka who easily beat Mihaela Buzarnescu.
When it comes to Konta’s match, it was not an easy one; at least in the first set. Jakupovic started strong, taking three out of four games. However, Johanna turned it around and won the set in 45 minutes. The second set began with trading breaks, but Konta then pushed hard for the win. In an interview after the match, the 27-year-old said that she had never played Jakupovic before, so it took her some time to adjust.
Along with Konta and Bolter, Harriet Dart was playing this week as well. Unfortunately, she also lost in quarter-finals. Dart was playing against Ysaline Bonaventure in the Manchester Trophy, who beat her 6-4, 6-3.
All in all, it was a busy week for UK betting apps users and tennis fans alike. Unfortunately, two out of three British players lost, so we’ll only watch Johanna Konta in the following week. However, she is in excellent form in this tournament, so her matches are sure to be exciting.
UPDATE: Unfortunately, earlier today Konta lost to Ashleigh Barty (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) in the Nature Valley Open finals.
