Just a few hours ago, FIFA announced the winner of the best goal in the 2018 World Cup. This accolade goes out to France’s Benjamin Pavard. The 22-year-old scored only one goal during the Cup, but that goal proved to be more than enough for winning the prestigious FIFA award.
Pavard netted a goal in France’s clash with Argentina in the Round of 16. Moreover, this match was one of the most exciting ones in the entire competition. It is no wonder that the best goal of the World Cup originated from the France-Argentina game.
The first goal of the match came in the eleventh minute. France won a penalty kick, and Antoine Griezmann converted it with ease. However, Argentina managed to level the score in the 41st minute of the tie thanks to a beautiful goal from Angel Di Maria. Seven minutes later, Gabriel Mercado secured a 2-1 lead for Argentina.
Didier Deschamps’ men left the field with a big cloud of uncertainty over their heads. However, all of that changed just a few minutes after the start of the second half. Benjamin Pavard levelled the game with one of the most brilliant goals we’ve seen in the recent World Cup history.
Benjamin Pavard was surprised to see the ball in Argentina’s net. As France’s international explained, he didn’t plan on netting a goal. “The ball bounced up as it came to me. I didn’t even think about it. I just tried to get over it and keep it down, said Pavard. He added, “I was trying to hit it in the direction it came from, which is what the strikers always tell me. I didn’t think it over, and when it went in I just felt so happy.”
After Pavard’s goal, everything fell into its place for France. Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the 64th and 68th minute of the game, bringing the victory closer to France. Even though Sergio Aguero managed to decrease France’s lead in the 93rd minute of the game, France, the favourite on best betting sites, was the ultimate winner of the match, and eventually of the 2018 World Cup.
